Subscribers

People who want to hear from you.

Subscribers belong to publications

Each publication has its own subscriber base. When someone subscribes to your publication, they're added as a subscriber to that publication. Use tags for segmentation—tagging subscribers by interest, source, or engagement level.

Want multiple newsletters? Create multiple publications, each with its own subscriber base.

Viewing subscribers

Go to any publication and click the Subscribers tab to see everyone subscribed. Filter by status to focus on active, pending, or unsubscribed subscribers.

Subscriber statuses

Active Pending Unsubscribed Bounced
  • Active — receives your emails
  • Pending — hasn't confirmed yet (if you use double opt-in)
  • Unsubscribed — opted out
  • Bounced — email address doesn't work

You can reactivate unsubscribed people if they ask to rejoin. Bounced addresses are permanent and cannot be resubscribed.

Bounce rate & list hygiene

Your bounce rate is the percentage of emails that fail to deliver. A high bounce rate damages your sender reputation and can get your account suspended.

Accounts exceeding 2% bounce rate will be suspended. You get one chance to appeal and clean your list. A second violation results in permanent ban.

To maintain a healthy list:

  • Remove bounced subscribers — they can't receive emails anyway
  • Use double opt-in — prevents fake or mistyped emails from being added
  • Clean your list before importing — verify email addresses from old lists
  • Remove inactive subscribers — people who haven't opened in 6+ months
  • Don't buy email lists — purchased lists have high bounce rates

Check your bounce rate anytime in the Statistics page under Email Deliverability.

Resending verification emails

If a subscriber is stuck in Pending status, you can resend their verification email. Hover over the subscriber row and click the send icon. Click the Send button that appears to confirm. The verification link in the new email will be valid for 7 days.

Customizing confirmation emails

Pro/Team

Pro and Team users can fully customize the subscribe confirmation experience to match their brand:

Sender customization

Confirmation emails automatically send from your default domain email address and name instead of Joyful. Set up a verified custom domain to send confirmation emails from your own address like hello@yourdomain.com.

Branding removal

The "Powered by Joyful" branding is automatically removed from both the confirmation email and the verification success page for Pro and Team users.

Custom redirect URL

Send subscribers to your own welcome page after they confirm instead of your publication page. Great for:

  • Onboarding sequences on your website
  • Welcome pages with next steps
  • Lead magnet downloads
  • Course or community access pages

Custom button text

Change the button text on the verification success page from "Visit [Publication]" to something more relevant like "Get Started", "Access Your Account", or "Download Now".

Managing subscribers

Click into a publication to see everyone subscribed. From the Subscribers tab you can view subscriber details and filter by status.

Importing subscribers

Click Import Subscribers to upload a CSV. See the import docs for format details. The short version: you need an email column, and firstName/lastName are optional.

Duplicates

If someone tries to subscribe when they're already subscribed to your publication, they won't be added twice. Imports also skip duplicate emails automatically.
